An Alternative Planting in Metro Detroit

At M-10 in Southfield, we planted herbaceous perennials in a curving grand design. We organized the planting in this way so it would have a more manicured or purposeful look. Many who live in this area appreciate neat and tidy over wild and sprawling. It was all part of a grand experiment in the hopes it would stabilize the slopes and look attractive. These photos were taking in spring of 2010, just three years after installation. The pink blossoms are Rosa x 'Nearly Wild' and the purple flowering plants are Nepeta x faaseenii 'Walkers Low'. Both of these plants have performed remarkably well in these harsh urban conditions.
